Why we built this
Most speaker-test sites treat surround sound as an afterthought — a row of buttons labeled with channel names. We built Speaker Test 'n' Cleaner around the surround setup as the main event: a room diagram you can arrange to match your actual space, with true discrete multichannel output when your hardware supports it and honest binaural simulation when it doesn't.
Frequently asked questions
Is any audio recorded or uploaded?
No. Every tool runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API — nothing you hear is ever sent to a server, recorded, or stored anywhere but your own device's local storage (used only to remember your speaker layout).
Why does every test channel use the same tone?
The Speaker Test tool's stereo and surround tabs intentionally play the same 440Hz reference tone from every channel. The point of these tools is to verify spatial routing — which speaker is playing — not to test pitch. Varying the tone per channel actually makes it harder to judge position, since your ear has to separate "different pitch" from "different location."
Can this really test a real 5.1, 7.1, or custom speaker system?
If your operating system has your sound device configured for multichannel output (5.1/7.1/9.1), your browser reports more than 2 available output channels, and we route true discrete audio to each one. If it only reports stereo — the most common case, especially on headphones — we simulate each speaker's position using binaural panning instead, which still gives you a meaningful directional test. The Customize option lets you add or remove speakers to match a setup that doesn't fit a standard layout.
Is the Speaker Cleaner safe to use?
It plays tones within the normal operating range of any speaker, so it will not damage healthy hardware. As with any water-damaged device, wipe away visible moisture first, keep it on a flat surface, and if it's been submerged, wait 24–48 hours before powering it on regardless of what any cleaning tool tells you.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes — both tools work on modern mobile browsers. The Speaker Cleaner in particular is built primarily for phone speakers, as a phone speaker cleaner sound.
